"holidays most definitely out of the ordinary"

Le Moulin du Chemin and les Ecuries du Saumort are located in the leafy Saumort Valley, deep in the French pastoral region known as the Pays de Gâtine. There are miles of secluded paths and lanes in an unspoiled and changing landscape - perfect for hacking-out - with  oodles of birds, butterflies, wild flowers and animals to be seen. The region of Pays de Gâtine is a veritable idyllic rural paradise.

Le Moulin is 80km inland from la Rochelle, and 60km south of the Loire. It is a convivial auberge, where you are hosted by proprietors, Carolynn Grimaldi and Peter Roche. House capacity is ten so  are welcomed as a respected Moulin house-guest - never "just another client"

"A wonderful holiday - quiet, beautiful countryside; comfortable rooms; attentive, friendly hosts; and rounded-off each day by convivial evening dinner parties with excellent food and drink.  Thank you."

David Vickery, Petersfield, Hants, UK

Splendid breakfast comprises delicious crusty French bread, and croissants fetched fresh from the boulangerie each day, sweet local butter, creamy local honey, home made confitures and steaming fresh coffee, tea or chocolate. Muesli, cereal flakes, yoghurt, dried fruits, etc, are provided at breakfast as well as an abundance of seasonal fresh fruits.

We provide you with a first-class packed lunch comprising a baguette sandwich (with bread baked the same morning - of course, what else would you expect - and different delicious fillings each day), crisps, little French cakes, chocolate bars, cereal bars and a generous selection of seasonal fresh fruit (you choose what you want from baskets provided) and drinks (again, you choose your own from the drinks fridge – water, soft drinks, beer, cider and/or wine).

Riding at Les Ecuries du Saumort we will give you directions to the stables for riding, or, if you don't have a car, we will transport you. Most folk choose to ride for an hour or two in the morning - hacking out with Sarah as your guide, or instruction in one of Saumort Farm's open or closed schools - you decide beforehand with Sarah what will suit you best.

Après riding there are plenty of things to do at le Moulin - or rien if you choose. Take a long hike or a quiet stroll. Cycle to a local village - you can rent a bike from le Moulin by prior arrangement. Visit one of the many local places of cultural, historic and natural interest.

If you want to chill-out, read a good book, relax by the pool. No urgency – if you need to recharge, this is your opportunity. You can relax by the pool, or go exploring on foot or by car. Le Moulin has a sizable library of popular books, table tennis, boules, etc, to keep you occupied. The pool is heated to 29°C to ensure is it pleasurable even in early spring and late autumn.

If you like walking, your hosts will supply high-lighted maps and clear, professionally produced route notes as well as plenty of useful and interesting information. Three attractive paths converge at le Moulin. After a short distance they split into several other delightful and little-used byways. In addition, several way marked walks taking-in nearby places of interest are within a short drive of le Moulin.
